Don’t for (even) one moment think a Designer’s life is all fabric and frippery.
I love my part-time job. With 20+ years’ full time experience I have the runs on the board. I also know that Interior Design is never about the internals, it’s about the interior of humanity, and boy, did today prove it.
Long story short: I met with a number of teams who shared a space to work towards creating an environment that worked for them all and would also bring out the best in their team members…or so I thought!
What I was faced with when I met the team leaders was friction, angst, anger, in-fighting and contradiction. I’m experienced, my strength is seeing the difference between what people say and what they mean; it’s why my clients follow me. I get people.
This meeting saddened me. It reminded me of all the times we externalise our frustrations, blame others and don’t face our own demons. When we act like that we don’t get the best outcomes for ourselves and we push people away.
The Dalai Lama said “Happiness is not something readymade. It comes from your own actions”.
Remembering that our actions speak louder than words, and that our behaviour externalises what beats in our heart, let’s work on getting our interior in shape.
